Course Offerings

Anchor 1
Art 1

     Art 1 will go over the basics of 2D and 3D art making. Art 1 will focus on the learning of basic art vocabulary, drawing techniques, the elements and principles of art, good craftsmanship, and components strong compositions.  Many of the projects will require basic drawing skills and a creative thought process, though these skills will increase as the course continues. Some art history will be taught in relation to the art media. Students will be expected to reflect on and respond to art in the form of oral critiques, written responses, research, and quizzes. A weekly sketchbook assignment will also be required.

Sculpture & Ceramics 1

    Students must have taken Art 1, with a C or higher (or have teacher permission) to take this course.

 

    Students will learn the basic processes to work with clay. These will include: slab, coil, and pinch pots. Students will make functional and decorative ceramics out of clay, as well as sculptures from found objects. Drawings will be required for preliminary sketches of projects and project planning. Some art history will be taught in relation to the art media. Students will be expected to reflect on and respond to art in the form of oral critiques, written responses, research, and quizzes.

Prerequisits

All art classes must be passed with a "C" or higher to move on to the next course. 

Students must take all available art courses before taking an "independent study" in art. 

Beginning Drawing

     Students must have taken Art 1, with a C or higher (or have teacher permission) to take this course.

 

     Students will explore drawing techniques using many types of media including: graphite, charcoal, pastels, ink, colored pencils, and mixed media. Students will be to develop technical skills and their own style of drawing. Some art history will be taught in relation to the art media. Students will be expected to reflect on and respond to art in the form of oral critiques, written responses, research, and quizzes. A weekly sketchbook assignment will also be required.

Sculpture & Ceramics 2

       Students must have taken Art 1 and Sculpture and Ceramics 1, with a C or higher (or have teacher permission)  to take this course.

 

       Students will expand upon 3-Dimensional processes that they learned in Sculpture and Ceramics 1. Students will continue to make functional and decorative ceramics, and sculptures, but will begin to create at a higher level of craftsmanship and skill.  Students will also learn the basics of throwing on a ceramics wheel. Drawings will be required for preliminary sketches of projects and project planning. Some art history will be taught in relation to the art media. Students will be expected to reflect on and respond to art in the form of oral critiques, written responses, research, and quizzes.

Painting

       Students must have taken Art 1 and Beginning Drawing, with a C or higher (or have teacher permission)  to take this courses.

 

      Several types of painting will be taught including: watercolor, tempera, acrylic, and watercolor pencils. Drawings will be required for preliminary sketches of projects and project planning. Some art history will be taught in relation to the art media. Students will be expected to reflect on and respond to art in the form of oral critiques, written responses, research, and quizzes.

Prints

      Students must have taken Art 1, and Beginning Drawing, with a C or higher (or have teacher permission) to take this course.

 

      This course will be offered every other school year, rotating with Advanced Drawing.

 

      Students will learn different techniques to make prints. They will use many linoleum print techniques with various projects. Theses techniques will include: mono-prints, colored prints, reduction prints, jig-saw prints, and stencil making. Drawings will be required for preliminary sketches of projects and project planning. Some art history will be taught in relation to the art media. Students will be expected to reflect on and respond to art in the form of oral critiques, written responses, research, and quizzes.

Advanced Drawing

     Students must have taken Art 1, and Beginning Drawing, with a C or higher (or have teacher permission) to take this course. 

     This course will be offered every other school year, rotating with Prints.

 

      Students will expand upon drawing skills learned in Beginning Drawing. Projects will increase in complexity and students will begin to develop higher levels of craftsmanship and skill. Some art history will be taught in relation to the art media. Students will be expected to reflect on and respond to art in the form of oral critiques, written responses, research, and quizzes. A weekly sketchbook assignment will also be required.
